Nonfiction:
A friend recommended Samantha Irby’s essays to me, so I obtained two of her collections from the library. Wow, No Thank You. was a good introduction to her work, I think, addressing topics from dealing with her social anxiety and physical health, all the way to publishing her first book and having a project in television Development Hell. Irby writes with generous dollops of self-deprecating humor and frank, humorous acknowledgment of her difficult childhood and various health issues.
Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby begins in 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Fanfiction:
Knife Skills by Hark_bananas is a delightful post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier story in which Bucky Barnes makes new life for himself and then makes room for Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers in it. Bucky has gotten his memories back and is living in Brooklyn in a shabby apartment when he sees a sign for a job involving knife skills…which turn out to be needed to teach a cooking class. I also loved the bit with the socks. Eventually, Bucky and Steve are back to being a couple, but for me that part was just icing on the cake of someone slowly creating himself again.
